Names
These ideas are freely adapted from the excellent writing workshop ideas of Colette Bryce – http://www.theguardian.com/books/2011/jul/12/poetry-workshop-names-colette-bryce
SUGGESTED SEQUENCE: (A) First each wrote quickly her or his own list of names, without any other stimulus. Then we shared and discussed what we'd 'found'. Then (B) we thought briefly about the effect of 'names in lists'. Then we listened to a few poems (C. further reading). Then, without discussion, we wrote our own responses in 20 minutes. Afterwards we shared - and suggested variations, including the exercise 'names and images', (D). There is one example (E). I will post others when I receive them.
A. To explore PERSONAL POSSIBILITIES
2 minute quick-write: names - that interest you – that you’ve heard, read or made up.
“.... proper names, improper names, first names, worst names, short blunt names, double-barrelled names, married and unmarried names, nicknames, sick names, family names and names from other cultures, terms of endearment, pet names, work names, school names, fool names – titled and untitled, known and unknown.”
After 2 minutes, share some of these and discuss contexts and connections and why they are remembered.
