Answering back
To say something original and valuable it may be important to look from a new angle, speak in a different voice, imagine how people or events could be otherwise.
Near and far exercise: two 5-minute free-writes in succession.
Choose an object/ view from a window, inside or outside. Position yourself emotionally and write freely. After 5 minutes, stop.
Move closer or further away, or reposition yourself emotionally. Now look again, and ‘answer back’ to your first description. You may now be taking in only a detail, or maybe the original object may no longer be completely visible. Write again for 5 minutes.
Re-read your writing and see which words or phrases have most force. Think how you might take your writing further. Write again for 10 minutes.
